「雨の日曜日」

シウダー デル エステは国境にある、免税特区。パラグアイはもちろん、ブラジルやアルゼンチンから多くの人がお買い得な電化製品やブランド品を求め、やってくる。街はいつでもごった返していて、乱雑に並ぶ看板の下、人々が行ったり来たりしている。ある雨の日、僕らは町外れの宿から、街へと繰り出した。前日にすでに目当てのものを見つけてあり、今日それを買って、そのままブラジルへ向かうつもりだ。だが街に着いて愕然とした。何百軒もあるであろう、店々がすべて閉まっている。路上に並んでいたはずの屋台も、ごった返していた買い物客も、全くいない。「そうか、今日は日曜日か！」僕らは、愕然とした。静まり返った街に、雨音だけが鳴っていた。

Ciudad del Este is a tax-free boarder city. Many people from Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina come to shop for electrical appliances and brand goods. The city is always busy with people come and go under the street and shop signs. On a rainy day, we were supposed to purchase something we found the day before and move on to the next destination, Brazil. But when we got there, all the shops, like hundreds of them, were all closed. No stands on the street nor shoppers. Then we figured out that it was Sunday. Disappointed on the calm and quiet street, all we heard was the sound of rain.
